  • Nefarious planning for your Fujoshi holiday

    Untitled

For friends in twitter, you probably know where I was last month or so. 😀

When my roommate moved to Tokyo for a year for his research (and I, in turn, moved to Australia), I made a vow that I will abuse his couch and visit him while he was in Japan.

What made me particularly excited about this trip was not the fact that I was going to Japan, but the fact that I was going to Japan on a holiday. I’ve often stopped by Japan and mostly it was for work or for a conference. So it was frustrating for me to see Japan as a business traveller. It was fun, of course, meeting friends along the way but it wasn’t exactly the kind of fun this fujoshi wanted.

But how does one plan a perfect fujoshi holiday?

It isn’t an easy task, I tell ya. A number of my friends who were planning a holiday to Japan has approached me time and time again, asking for suggestions on what to do, what to eat, and where to go. The thing is, this varies for every fujoshi. But no worries, I’ve learned a lot from this trip and I’m happy tell you guys about my experience!

I visited lots of awesome places and met so many awesome people and I think those things didn’t happen if not for the careful planning involved in this holiday. So here’s some of the things I learned in preparation for your fujoshi holiday!

  • Room 801 totally happened and it was awesome

    Room801

I have actually reached that age where I realize that am far too old for conventions. Last year, I went to SMASH and it was just much too big and too crazy. And while I did enjoy meeting my new friends in Australia as well as seeing that muscled Portgas D. Ace at the con, I couldn’t say that I felt at home with Australia’s anime and manga community after SMASH.

So I’m happy to have participated and be a part of Room801. I was quite set to living the isolated fujoshi life in Wollongong, but Room801 really delivered in connecting not just fujoshi but fans who have an appreciation for fictional non-normative sexual relationships. Surely, there were tons of yaoi but even yuri, queer, and pigeons were well represented in this convention.

  • #801MMF Spotlight: BL’s New Wave

When a couple of Japanese BL scholars went down to Manila, I spent a good week with them – interviewing local female artists and getting to know BL fans in Manila. During down time, they had a chance to ask me, “What kind of BL do you read?” And as with everything that involves my feels, it was hard to say a proper answer and went on to say the names of the authors I love: Yamashita Tomoko, Nakamura Asumiko, Kumota Haruko, etc. As I go down the list, they were completely unfamiliar with the names until I said “Est Em” and one of them interjects, saying, “Ah! So you like New Wave works!”

    “Eh? New Wave?”

    “Yes. New Wave.”

Back then, I had no idea if they meant some 80s music movement but I silently nod until months later, upon reviewing for this MMF and the Fujoshi Bible, I’ve been reminded of the term New Wave. It seems this New Wave is sweeping the future of BL.

  • #801MMF: The Fiyaysta So Far

HAH! And you fujojos thought you’re safe in your quiet little holes, mumbling naughty sounds uke make while they’re getting pummeled by their seme. Oh wait… you don’t do that!?! You should! It’s a very liberating experience as a fujoshi and I personally find it educational in your learning of Japanese.

However these fujojos seem to have better things to do than reading their pr0n out loud. And I’m so happy they found the time to gather their feels about BL.

Now, I’ve done my bit of homework and wrote a bit about Boy’s Love Manga, how the Japan and the rest of the English speaking world views it. I’ve also written a bit about the Fujoshi Manga Bible: what some critics consider as seminal reading, if you know what I mean?

… Alright. So you don’t. Well at least Terry Hong gives it a shot by reading Heart of Thomas. Even Johanna Draper Carlson managed to pick a few of her seminal readings ((really, you should get this by now))! Maya Lassiter took her reading seriously by listing down her selection of the best character driven BL stories that feature salarymen. I love salarymen. Particularly the old ones. But in case you don’t like old men – I MEAN – salarymen, she also listed down her favorites when it comes to high school boys and university blokes. She sure did get all her bases covered ((wink wink ~wo)).

Okay. So my puns are NOT working AT ALL.

But you know what, at lease Jocelyne is getting into the spirit of things! She’s a translator by day and she gets her hands into the dirtiest stuff EVER. Last year, her gift to 801 is sharing her interview with Est Em. This year, she collected the nastiest stuff she’s ever translated. At the same time, she’s also drafted a contest asking you fujojos what’s your favorite BL title! Based on her post, she’s giving away a lot of Hetalia’s AmericaxEngland doujins. I even see a Gintama doujin there and I’ll see if I can snag that title!

Speaking of contests: Have you joined Ash’s contest in his site? It’s quite simple: just name an artist whose work you’d like to read more in English. You’ll never know. Sublime and DMP might be listening.

Outside of BL is Sarah Hayes’ contribution to the MMF: a glimpse into Artifice! Now, fujojo, Artifice has been in our BL webcomic recs last year but I’m quite sure my blurb is not enough so enjoy Sarah’s article.

Now fujojo, you are more than welcome to participate in this MMF! If you wanna know how: read here. I’m also hosting a contest for you fujojos to win some awesome books! *A*) I honestly wish I’d win them myself but I… can’t! >A<)9

Just a reminder: the new BL webcomic recs and the art submissions for Name your Kinks end on 05 August 2013, 12 a.m. EST. I’ve received a few… BUT I WANT MORE.

You have a few days left so keep it coming, fujojo! In the meantime, I hope est em’s drunken salaryman centaur has entertained you.

  • #801MMF: The Fujoshi Bible

In Eureka’s Fujoshi Manga Compendium, there’s this interesting section where they list down the things a fujoshi must read. They called it the Fujoshi Manga Bible.  I thought it’d be best to share the list down here for fujoshi to check what these women think are titles that we fujojos must read. I’ll also try to append what’s available in English!

  • 801 MMF: Happy Yaoi no Hi!

    Ladies and gents!

I’m happy to announce that finally the 801 Manga Moveable Feast is officially open! 😀

As host of this month’s MMF, I would like to invite all you enthusiastic fujoshi with so many feels to participate in this BL manga feast!

Or, you can also join the contests in the website: name your kinks or name new webcomics. The prizes are, of course, lovely.

Ash is also giving away a Shiuko Kano BL Collection, so don’t miss out, all right?

It’s a crazy party this 8/01!!  Let’s have a fun fiyaysta celebrating this Yaoi no Week! 😀

  • #801MMF Giveaway No. 2: Name your kinks

    Fujojos, wat do?

I’ve been stuck in a limbo trying to find some few titles to write about without knowing, what do you fujojos exactly want?

Well other than SCHMEX, I know you fujojos can get specific. A kink meme is a litany to our needs thus here I am asking, what are your favorite kinks in BL manga?

If you give me an answer, I’ll give you a reward.

  • #801MMF Giveaway No. 1: We want new webcomics!

I’ve done this last year and we’re doing this again! 😀

Last year was so much fun and with all your recs, all of us spent some sweet time reading those awesome BL recs.

But we know that that there’s more out there. And there’s more that we haven’t read. As such, I’m putting up the polls again and pooling all your powers so that we can make a 2013 BL Webcomic Rec List! 😀

    How to join?

Simply reply in the comments section below or tweet @khursten in twitter with the hashtag #801BLwebrec. You can also use the same hashtag in tumblr (or you can reblog my tumblr post with your answer)

Like last year,  I’ll be giving away a copy of my favorite comic from last year’s list: Tripping Over You’s The Blue Book & Love Bites to a randomly selected contributor to this list! The contributor can write down as many webcomics as he/she likes however he/she will only receive 1 entry in the raffle.

The contest will run from today, 24 July 2013 until 5 August 2013 at 12:00 a.m. (EST/NEW York). That would probably be 2 p.m. in Sydney on 6 August or 12 p.m. in Manila.

So bring in your recs! Make sure that they haven’t been recc’d before! Check the previous list!

  • 801 MMF: A Fujojo Fiyaysta!

    801. Yaoi. Boy’s Love. Tanbi. Shounen-Ai. BL. Pr0n.

    Call it whatever you want.

    Fujoshi. Fudanshi. Fujojo.

    Call us whatever you want.

We probably wouldn’t care because all we know is that 8/01 is our special day and here in Otaku Champloo we’ll be celebrating a fiesta for what we fujoshi love: Boy’s Love manga.

From 8/01 until 8/10 (OMG YES!) Otaku Champloo will be celebrating Boy’s Love manga with all you fujojos and curious bypassers out there. For ten days (FO REALS!), we’ll be talking about those comics where boys who like boys who do boys like they’re girls or like boys! We’ll be talking about our favorite titles, our favorite ships, and our favorite kinks.

The 801 MMF will be a celebration of a genre that has been around for forty years and has given countless of women thousands of feels which eventually transformed manga conventions by producing works that challenge Japanese concepts of aesthetics, fiction, and sexuality.

It’s an exciting time to be a fujoshi! So if you have some thoughts and feels about Boy’s Love, feel free to join us in the 801 MMF!
