    Hey fujojos! Happy Yaoi no Hi!!

    If you’ve been abstaining from your delusional thoughts over boys falling in love, then it’s the perfect time to indulge yourself and bask in BL all day long. For all you trashy fujojos, it’s an opportunity to revisit your favourite stories and ships. For others who have lost touch with BL, perhaps it’s time to reconnect and find some new titles to try!

    This year is particularly special for me. As it turns out, on the 21th of this month, this blog has been around for 10 years! This day has been creeping on me and I often realise my blog anniversary often after the date. It’s crazy and to be honest, I can’t believe it’s been ten years since I wrote my first post! I also can’t believe I’ve kept this blog for more than ten years! I’m more delinquent than most blogs but it’s crazy just to have this blog and to have met some amazing people in the process. It’s been a batshit crazy decade that I just can’t handle all these amazing feels rushing through me this month. 

    In celebration of this blogversary, I’d like to invite you to a month long party in my blog! I’ll be doing a couple of features over the month and I will be giving away some goodies as I recollect the best things that happened to my fujoshi life in the last ten years. Hence, Otaku Champloo is celebrating Yaoi Day FOR AN ENTIRE MONTH. Well, maybe we’ll be celebrating my otaku life for this month and you can join me in recollecting our love for manga in the last ten years!

    But for now, allow me to start your day right by greeting you a happy yaoi no hi, fujojo! May your day filled with love and boys who love each other!

  • [801] And so the pr0n goes to….

    So before I make the reveal on this, I first want to thank the following lovely ladies who replied to my call for BL Webcomics on time (meaning before 3 PM NY/Easter Time – 3 AM in Manila): Lamborg (@neuromantically),  Jocelyne Allen (@brainvsbook),  Melinda (@mbeasi),  Ellestrois (tumblr), Kimiko (@ShroudedDancer), Cathe/Tiny Taikodrum (tumblr), Elibard/Corallini (tumblr), Anne Lee (@apricotsushi). Thanks to all of you, we made an awesome list and more and more people are even suggesting that I should look into other titles!

    At the same time, I want to thank those who gave their recs much later than the contest time: fishydotlove (tumblr), montflorit (tumblr), tachixneko (tumblr), @Oshioki_koneko, @Kanzen_Ron. Do know that recs came in time and I will actually append Parallet in a few minutes!

    So ladies, without your efforts we probably would be in the dark as to where we will turn for our BL webcomics. And for those who are just chiming in, you might as well bookmark that list because I’ll try to update that post for any recommendations. Maybe I’ll be doing this as a yearly thing.

    Spotlight (801 Special): Est Em

    I have this horrible habit of figuring out the lives of people I see when I’m traveling. I love to do this in airports since people hold many stories in such a small space.

    A woman walks by, clutching her Berkin bag. Probably a trophy wife of some Asian business magnate and she just arrived from shopping trip in New York. A tall lean guy with long legs, tattered jeans, and a Real Madrid jersey felt like a backpacker on his way home. If he had the hipster glasses, it’s either his boyfriend’s jersey or just something he wore to impress someone.

    Sometimes there are people who become alive just by what they wear. A Spanish guy in a plain white shirt and fitted jeans walks to a coffeeshop. He sits cross legged, reading the newspaper he got from the plane, sipping his coffee with such elegance. God knows why my eyes are drawn to him, but in my head, that man must have been a matador once. Or a painter. Probably the hero of an Est Em novel.

  • [801] The Ultimate BL Webcomic Rec List

    Can you believe that Boy’s Love comics has been around for more than 40 years?

    One would think that Shounen Ai, Yaoi, Boy’s Love is just a passing fancy among girls but its continued influence not only in Japanese otaku subculture but in the global subculture shows the power of the genre.

    Yes. Yaoi is all over the globe. There’s a book on Boy’s Love that speaks about Yaoi fans in Indonesia, Germany, Italy, and Chine. And there are scholars in Japan who study other fujoshi subcultures in the Philippines and even Latin America. The internet has made yaoi accessible and day by day, girls like you and me become aware of their fujoshi goggles.

    In the last few years I’ve become more and more aware of emerging BL artists outside of Japan. What was once amateur efforts in writing BL have eventually involved in a BL that’s quite mature and very different from Japan’s. It’s fantastic how many of these artists are yet unpublished and find the internet as the space for their works. If I had money, I’d get these artist to publish in an anthology because they all deserve a shot in getting their stories more available to the public.

    To pull this list of BL Webcomics, I asked fujojos and fudanshis to give me their recs for a prize! Many gave the same recs which proves that there are those who have made a name out there. The prize I’m giving away is also from an artist who made a name drawing BL for Suikoden and Devil May Cry, Jo Chen. In These Words was a comic she drew for her doujin circle Guilt|Pleasure. Initially a webcomic, Guilt|Pleasure’s efforts eventually gave them enough fan base and chapters to make a volume before it was published by DMP and now published in Japan under Libre’s BeBoy Gold. Isn’t that fantastic?

    But I’m quite sure outside of here there are many BL webcomics online. Here are your recommendations (in alphabetical order)!

  • And on this day, we celebrate yaoi

    Yes, yes~ this blog is a constant reminder that this day exists for us fujoshis to enjoy and celebrate everything that relates to boys love~ SO FUJOSHI, BE MERRY! YOU GO AND DRAFT THAT PR0N!!

    Today’s a great day to look back and think of all the yaoi titles you’ve read in the past year. A lot of great yaoi titles were published this year too, my favorite being Seduce me after the Show by Est Em. This title is stunning, if not, brilliant — despite the really strange title. ^^;;

    As a part of looking back, I thought I’d let my fujoshi imagination run wild a little and share a morsel of how this fujoshi brain works. In this Yaoi no Hi, I thought I’d teach my readers a little thing that pretty much has changed the lives of many of my friends. In this installation, I teach you… the Fujoshime (腐女子目), or Fujoshi Vision.

  • Happy Yaoi no Hi!

    Fujoshis run wild because today is your holiday! Today we are celebrating Yaoi no Hi, an otaku holiday derived from the 801 combi that represents ‘ya-o-i’ in Japanese culture.

    To celebrate things, they’ve released Tonari no 801chan2 in Akiba! Tonari no 801chan is a book based on the mangas done by Ajiko Kojima in her blog. Her comics are hilarious, but the book has more extras on 801chan’s crazy fujoshi antics. lol. I think a DVD with their stories will be released soon. September 5? The premise is the story of a guy who has a fujoshi girlfriend and how he gets by in getting along with her. There is also another novel, Fujoshi Kanojo, which has already sparked the interest of movie makers. lol. I guess the Densha Otoko craze has now turned to the fujoshi side.

    Speaking of which, Mangacast announced before that Mediablasters is licensing “Mousou Shoujo Otaku Kei”. I had the chance to read the manga thanks to a friend and love it to the core. It’s the story about this guy who fell in love to this fujoshi. The fujoshi is… really weird to an extent. She’s quite hardcore with nothing but her pairings and her doujinshis at the center of her universe. How the guy tries to win the girl’s heart is hilarious! XD I learned a lot about fujoshi culture, and laughed my heart out when the girl said “Can you call me Shinji-kun instead!?” XD People curious about the fujoshi life should try getting this manga. Honestly, reading it is like listening in on how my fujoshi friends and I babble like mad idiots about our favorite series and BL seiyuus. It’s really nice. If you know the fanfare (e.g. Hagaren no Oujisama = overkill!! XDD) the series is a lot more fun. I wish Mediablasters does a good job with translating it. Although, I must say, even if they translate it, I won’t get to buy it because novelty titles such as this one rarely gets here. *sigh* otaku life is so hard on this side of the planet. I wish I lived a few degrees higher.
