  • #801MMF: All good things must come to an end

The fiyaysta is winding down and alas, the party comes to an end.

But if you will allow me, I’d like to sum up the last hurrahs for this party.

Sarah shares her review of Rihito Takarai & Venio Tachibana’s Seven Days. Anna looks into Est Em’s Red Blinds the Foolish. While Melinda and Michelle check out Korean BL: Totally Captivated.

Over here at Otaku Champloo, Jocelyne, Anne, and I cannot stop prattling and make nasty noises about BL in a special #801MMF podcast: Fujojocast. I’ve also listed down the 2013 BL Webcomic Rec List! And I’ve also announced the winners for those who joined the contests for this feast.

It’s been fun hosting the 801 MMF and for the genre that’s close to my heart, I’d be happy to do this all over again. In fact, as someone said to me over at twitter, everyday’s a yaoi day so make sure to make yaoi/bl a part of your life. Now, not all of you may like the idea of BL but I’m quite sure that if you give some of our recs a try, you might enjoy BL — even for just a bit. If you really didn’t, thanks for trying.

There’s no next MMF just yet… so does this mean the last one goes on forever? Well, manga’s quite a bit of genres left and if you ask me, someone should tap into that Gekiga genre. <3

Anyway, thank you so much everyone who participated in this MMF! If you guys missed anything this week and want to see all the happenings for this 801MMF, hover over to our mmf: 801 tag!

  • Winrars for #801MMF

Well, you fujojos fought long and hard! I learned so much about you guys and didn’t think reverse kinks were quite popular!

But I truly appreciate it, I really do. You’ve made this week really fun and we had a chance to discover a lot about BL, didn’t we?

    ANYWAY! On to the winrars!

  • #801MMF – Fujojocast no. 1: Not enough BL in the world!

Right-o! Put three fujojos in a room and they talk about pr0n. Even in a skype chatroom.

For the 801 MMF, I’m happy to share some time with Anne Lee from Chic Pixel and Jocelyne Allen from Brain vs. Book to talk about something close to our hearts: Boy’s Love Manga

Anne Lee’s translated a number of titles for DMG and she’s currently doing her PhD on Boy’s Love. Jocelyne Allen is also a translator for Sublime but she’s got a roster of BL titles under her belt. On the other hand, I’m just a BL fan. lol. Well, Anne and I move around the same academic BL circles, so we get around.

Either way, for this podcast, we’re doing an overview of BL and prattle on about sound effects in BL and all that jazz!

  • #801MMF – The BL Fiyaysta Continues

So, hello! How are you, Fujojo? Are you still partying hard?

Well, we won’t be stopping until the MMF ends, so yeah! In case you’re late in the party, here’s some things that people have been bringing to this fiyaysta!

Sarah has been quite a hard partyer and she has added some more things past her review of Artifice. She opens up about her fujoshi life and even shares with us her favorite BL. Foxy Lady Ayame also drafted her list of favorites which is a good blend of new and old and a dash of Asumiko. Surprised that DMG picked up Graduates/Classmates (Dokyuusei and Sotsugyousei) as well. They’ve gotten Double Mints too but… hrmm… haven’t seen that around either. Speaking of old, Ash at Experiments in Manga speaks of the awesomeness that is Yamashita Tomoko with her title Black-Winged Love. I love this book. I really do. You should too. <3

These folks were quite brave for writing their favorite BL. I mean… that’s just so hard. For me, at least. I can’t even get my five kinks together! Well at tumblr, fuckyeahfujoshi has a more coherent idea of 3 kinks she likes. And if anything, I would probably pick titles written by what BL critics and scholars refer to as “New Wave”.  I mean, just look at Koketsu Dining! Is that your usual BL?

Anyway, the fiyaysta goes on. Ash has already ended his giveaway while I’m asking for your help to vote on which visual kinks you guys like. Some of my contests are still ongoing and ends on the 9th. So go, fujojo! Let’s party hard until the very end!

  • #801MMF Review – Koketsu Dining

If Tiger Mask had a BL, it would have been like this.

A young man comes to his new home and meets his roommate who wears a tiger mask all day long (and even in his bath!)

  • #801MMF: My top 5 kinks

    Fujojos,

I know how hard it was to ask you what your favorite kinks are. Because while you guys were writing your answers, I’ve been writing mine. Even as I write this, I’m also thinking of other things that I like. But in general, if titles have these kinks, I’d most likely love these titles.

So without further ado, my top kinks.

  • #801MMF – So what do you think of these kinks?

Okay! So, some enthusiastic artists  sent in their entries and they’re amazing and quite varied!

There are others in the comments section which is still ongoing, but with the kinks drawn closed, it’s time to ask what you guys think about these kinks.

By the way, at the end of this is a poll asking you, my readers, which of these submitted works are your favorites. You can choose two entries. The one with the most votes will get the BL Design Book while the runner-up will be taking the BL 48 Te book.

So now, on to the entries! 😀 (Note: Concept and themes will be NSFW, so yeah! Proceed with caution!)

  • #801MMF: The Fiyaysta So Far

HAH! And you fujojos thought you’re safe in your quiet little holes, mumbling naughty sounds uke make while they’re getting pummeled by their seme. Oh wait… you don’t do that!?! You should! It’s a very liberating experience as a fujoshi and I personally find it educational in your learning of Japanese.

However these fujojos seem to have better things to do than reading their pr0n out loud. And I’m so happy they found the time to gather their feels about BL.

Now, I’ve done my bit of homework and wrote a bit about Boy’s Love Manga, how the Japan and the rest of the English speaking world views it. I’ve also written a bit about the Fujoshi Manga Bible: what some critics consider as seminal reading, if you know what I mean?

… Alright. So you don’t. Well at least Terry Hong gives it a shot by reading Heart of Thomas. Even Johanna Draper Carlson managed to pick a few of her seminal readings ((really, you should get this by now))! Maya Lassiter took her reading seriously by listing down her selection of the best character driven BL stories that feature salarymen. I love salarymen. Particularly the old ones. But in case you don’t like old men – I MEAN – salarymen, she also listed down her favorites when it comes to high school boys and university blokes. She sure did get all her bases covered ((wink wink ~wo)).

Okay. So my puns are NOT working AT ALL.

But you know what, at lease Jocelyne is getting into the spirit of things! She’s a translator by day and she gets her hands into the dirtiest stuff EVER. Last year, her gift to 801 is sharing her interview with Est Em. This year, she collected the nastiest stuff she’s ever translated. At the same time, she’s also drafted a contest asking you fujojos what’s your favorite BL title! Based on her post, she’s giving away a lot of Hetalia’s AmericaxEngland doujins. I even see a Gintama doujin there and I’ll see if I can snag that title!

Speaking of contests: Have you joined Ash’s contest in his site? It’s quite simple: just name an artist whose work you’d like to read more in English. You’ll never know. Sublime and DMP might be listening.

Outside of BL is Sarah Hayes’ contribution to the MMF: a glimpse into Artifice! Now, fujojo, Artifice has been in our BL webcomic recs last year but I’m quite sure my blurb is not enough so enjoy Sarah’s article.

Now fujojo, you are more than welcome to participate in this MMF! If you wanna know how: read here. I’m also hosting a contest for you fujojos to win some awesome books! *A*) I honestly wish I’d win them myself but I… can’t! >A<)9

Just a reminder: the new BL webcomic recs and the art submissions for Name your Kinks end on 05 August 2013, 12 a.m. EST. I’ve received a few… BUT I WANT MORE.

You have a few days left so keep it coming, fujojo! In the meantime, I hope est em’s drunken salaryman centaur has entertained you.

  • #801MMF: What is Boy’s Love Manga (BL)?

“What is BL?” A question I ask fujoshi who I meet here and there.

“Schmex,” is always the immediate answer that often comes with an almost mischievous laugh.

“Boy’s Love and everything that comes in between” is the most straightforward answer.

“Is that the same as yaoi,” another would ask.

“That’s the girly stuff, isn’t it?” One girl would comment which often sparks a discussion on what really makes Boys’ Love.

Boys’ Love is a term many fujoshi are familiar with yet one that easily confounds them. At times, I wonder, if it’s something we fujoshi have taken for granted. Simply because nothing is as clear as Boys’ Love manga. But at the same time, it’s a term that non-Japanese fans haven’t warmed up to.

Most of us still use yaoi and we often use the two interchangeably. Yaoi is to BL. BL is to yaoi. That fact that the English wikipedia redirects Boy’s Love to their yaoi page is telling how, outside of Japan, yaoi has better recall. And honestly, I thought for the longest time that this was the case at least until I’ve started reading some essays on BL only to find its parallels and differences.

It seems that there’s more to BL than just yaoi. And yaoi is a different animal compared to BL.
